India is facing a national suicide emergency with 2.3 lakh deaths a year due to suicide, of which one student dies by suicide every 60 minutes. Suicide the silent killer, is a public health crisis
WHY OUR WORK MATTERS
One in 20 Indians is depressed and 15 crores of our population experiences mental health issues. The highest rate of suicide is in the Age group of 15-29. Research has shown that having someone they can talk to when in distress could help them cope.
WHY YOU MATTER
More can – and must – be done to address this national emergency. With your help, we believe that we can reach out to more and more people who are at risk, in their time of crisis. Your help can come in the form of your time and your support.
WHO WE ARE
Samaritans Mumbai helpline has been providing emotional support for more than 30 years. At Samaritans Mumbai , we handle on average 30 calls a day, i.e around five calls in an hour. Every 12 minutes, someone contacts our helpline for emotional support and suicide prevention. Our helpline is operational from 3 pm to 9 pm everyday, while our email support is round the clock. We would like to be operational 24 x 7 on the helpline as well. There is a clear requirement for this, and we want to be there for a person in distress at any time. This depends on your donation.
HOW YOUR DONATION MATTERS
- Your Donation will help us increase the awareness of the presence of this helpline, that charges nothing for its services. The awareness campaign covers a fight against the debilitating effects of stigma associated with depression, suicide and mental illness. We are constantly developing strategies to reach out to a larger group of people for mental health awareness . We would also like to conduct research, educate and train peer support gatekeepers to become first response interventionists in order to more effectively pre-empt suicide. We already undertake a wide variety of suicide prevention training and awareness efforts, which effort is entirely run by volunteers.
We urgently need public donations to ensure we have the resources to respond to every single person in need. Your donation can help recruit volunteers, train and support more Crisis Interventionists and develop new technologies and services that will help us respond to more people faster.
JOIN HANDS
Together we can bring emotional support to people who are going through distress and share the dream to create an India that loses less people to suicide. Join hands to give our young a future, where they can share and cope better with thoughts and urges to suicide.
